Idea: The children could watch the dancers perform the whole dance on the DVD before they learn the movements.

Idea: Pupils could learn the add (+) section first, and perform this a few times in group, then learn the take away (-) section, and perform both parts together.

Idea: Children could try performing the Operations dance with the dancers on the DVD.

  1. ADD and TAKE AWAY do the opposite

Split the class into two groups (A and B). Group A perform the ADD part of the Operations dance, whilst group B perform the TAKE AWAY part (so they are performing the opposite).

Watch the dancers perform the opposite sections on the DVD:

MAIN ACTIVITY 5 – OPERATIONS DANCE

C ADD and TAKE AWAY do the opposite

Swap over, so Group A perform the TAKE AWAY part of the dance, whilst group B perform the ADD part.

Now try and perform the whole dance:

Everyone performs the ADD section

Then everyone performs the TAKE AWAY SECTION

Group A performs the ADD section whilst Group B performs the TAKE AWAY section.

Swap over – Group B performs ADD section whilst Group A performs the TAKE AWAY section.

Practise and perform to the music (using track ?)

Idea: Split the class into 2 groups (make sure there are some A’s and B’s in each half). Ask the children to perform the whole routine to each other to music.

Discuss the properties of ADD and TAKE AWAY and that ADDING makes something bigger and TAKING AWAY makes something smaller.

Idea:  This is a great way for the pupils to see that + is the opposite of – . You could demonstrate a few simple sums showing this; for example 1 + 2 = 3 and then  3 – 2 = 1…
